At Spoke, we think moments like these make it even more important to be clear about who you are and what your brand is about, rather than simply reacting to what everyone else is doing. Sometimes that means bringing a little more sensibility to a world where common sense can often be anything but.
One of our “Spokeisms” is “Fight Fire With Fire Water.™” Because what in the %$#@ would you ever fight fire with fire?
Maybe that works in war. It doesn’t work particularly well in marketing.
Yet brands do it all the time. A competitor talks about being faster, so we need to be even faster. They talk about innovation, so we need to be more innovative. They claim to have the best service, so naturally ours has to be even better.
Before long, everyone in the category is telling some version of exactly the same story, just with different logos attached.
The bigger problem is that the second you take your competitor’s story and try to one-up it, you’re actually telling their story for them. You’ve allowed them to define the conversation, and now you’re competing on their terms.
Fight Fire With Water™ isn’t about simply doing the opposite of what your competitors are doing. Different for the sake of being different isn’t much of a strategy either. It’s about finding a better approach, one rooted in who you actually are, what you uniquely bring to the table, and why that matters to the people you want to reach.
You’re not going to out-Nike Nike. You’re not going to out-Coke Coke. (And you shouldn’t have to.)
The opportunity is to understand your own strengths well enough, and your customers well enough, to build a story that only you can authentically tell. That’s where differentiation becomes more than a clever headline or marketing exercise. It becomes something customers can actually recognize, believe, and connect with.
There will always be pressure to be louder, bolder, faster, smarter, more innovative or whatever the latest marketing arms race happens to demand. But sometimes the better strategy is to stop reacting to everyone else and get clearer about yourself.
Be relevant. Be useful. Be authentic. Be unmistakably you. And when everyone else is busy fighting fire with fire?
